It's an interesting exhibition, and very impressive.

Utagawa Kuniyoshi(1797-1861) was one of the four artists(others: Hokusai, Hiroshige and Kunisada) who led the school of 'pictures of the floating world'. They were rival in the thriving industry of colour woodblock printing in mid 19 century.

Kuniyoshi specialised in imaginative depictions of samurais from Japan's past.

It was so surprising to know that he designed a series of prints, which featured some characters of the Chinese novel 'The Water Margin'. And there's also an enjoyment of discovering his comic prints, known as the 'Crazy Picture', which humorously showed the animals engage in human activities.
